Period, Hormones and How It Affects Your Skin

Teenage years
Teens going through puberty experience many hormonal changes—typically a decrease in estrogen (supports collagen production which is responsible for keeping the skin plum and free of wrinkles) and progesterone(regulates sleep, immunity and brain function) and an increase of testosterone (regulates oil glands and hair growth). These elevated testosterone levels cause glands to produce more oil, leaving your skin oily and shiny. Excess oil allows bacteria to grow leading to breakouts.
Skin tip
Always wash your face, especially when you are on your period. Cleansers with salicylic acid, a key acne fighting ingredient, will help treat current acne and can help prevent new pimples from forming. Also, once a week, it’s very beneficial to use a deep pore cleansing and disinfecting treatment
20-35 years
As you age out of your teen years, hormones begin to balance out. Balanced estrogen levels give skin a naturally flushed glow. Estrogen increases collagen and elastin levels, helping your skin look full and plump. During your period, testosterone and estrogen levels drop. The decrease can leave skin looking less vibrant with a sallow, yellowish tint.
Skin tip
Use products that contains Vitamin B3 can you help your skin look more full and lively. This ingredient has been proven to help skin’s tone and texture.
35-49 Years
As you age, your skin starts to lose elasticity and firmness as a result of decreasing collagen and elastin levels. Your skin will also begin to feel dry since your skin has a harder time retaining its natural moisture.
Skin tip
Use creamy moisturizers that contains vitamin B3 which binds water to your skin, keeping it moisturized all day long. A night cream can also help alleviate dry skin overnight, so your skin can wake up rejuvenated and refreshed.
